the big Bronze vats
they were for storing water in case of fire placed in the forbidden city,There are totally 308 big water vats in the forbidden city and 18 of them were gilded.the gold on each of these water vats was 3 kilos in weight.
Each one has air vents underneath, in winter ,charcoal fires would be set up to keep the water inside the water vats from freezing,so that the water would be ready for use all the time.
In 1900,when the Allied Forces of the Eight Powers invaded Beijing,the invaders encroached into the forbidden city,they scraped off the gold from the surface of the cauldrons with their bayonets and even today we still can see the scraches left by their bayonets clearly marked on the surface.
