The lamas believed that when Dalai Lama died,hie spirit would pass out of the corpse into a baby boy who was born right at the monment of Dalai Lama's death.Quite often there were many baby babies born at the same monment when Dalai Lama was dying,so a method of "drawing lots from the gold urn"was established.
The system is that many baby boys were to be selectedfrom various places after the death of a living buddha,and each child had a lot with his name inscribed on the lot,and all the lots were to be put into a gold vase.While lamas were reciting Buddhist scriptures,and people were watching, the high comissionners appointed and sent by emperor would pick up the lot dropped out of the shaking vase and show it to the people,thus ,the boy child with his name on it would be considered the reicarnation og the next living buddha.
This method was established by an imperial decree of Emperor Qianlong in 1792.
